Welcome to the Monastery of Saint Anthony
The monastery is dated back to the 4th century and is the oldest in the world and still operating Coptic Christian Monastery. It was built by the followers of the hermit Saint Anthony, the first Christian monk, who has devoutly practiced an ascetic life in a nearby cave, and is one of the fathers of modern Christian monasticism. The monastery facilitates today several churches, a bakery and a lush garden all surrounded by high walls.
Not far away another beautiful smaller monastery is situated – the Monastery of Saint Paul from Egypt. Dated back to the 4th century and still in operation as well, but smaller than the Monastery of Saint Anthony. The monastery was built around the cave Saint Paul was living in.
During this exclusive and individual tour your will get to know a lot about the past and present life of the monks inside the beautifully located monasteries directly from the monks themselves.
A truly hidden gem inside Egypt which should not be missed when visiting Egypt.
